Warning to fit smoke alarms following fire at Betws yn Rhos
PostedFire Officers are highlighting the importance of smoke alarms after a flat in Betws yn Rhos was gutted and two people were extremely lucky to escape with their lives following a fire in their home.
No working smoke alarms were fitted in the property. Two crews from Abergele were called to the property on Gwern Ciliau Road, Betws yn Rhos to deal with reports of a fire at 01.42hrs this morning, Tuesday October 8th.
Firefighters used four sets of breathing apparatus and one hose reel jet to extinguish the fire. All the occupants were out of the properties on arrival of NWFRS and were unhurt.
The fire caused 90% fire damage to the ground floor flat and its contents and 20% light smoke damage to the flat above.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Gary Brandrick, Senior Fire Safety Manager said: "I cannot overemphasise how lucky the two residents were to escape with their lives.
"Fire can spread incredibly quickly, and without the early detection provided by smoke alarms you are at greater risk of dying in a fire in your home. This fire caused severe damage to the property and highlights just how destructive fire can be.
"Not having smoke alarms fitted in your home is playing a very dangerous game with your life and the lives of your loved ones. Why put them at risk?
